Alice Lucile Harris

95, Avon, passed away on August 29, 2023.  She was a member of Plainfield Christian Church.  Alice was a school teacher for Star City High School and Eastern High School in Greentown, IN for many years.  She was a graduate of Purdue University.  Alice was an advocate for mental health awareness.  She was instrumental in setting up NAMI support groups in Howard County.  Alice was preceded in death by her husband Verl Kenneth Harris; daughter Martha Pirtle; parents Walter and Lucy Hough; three brothers and two sisters.  Survivors include her children Verl Allen (Judith) Harris, Ruth Ellen (Lawrence) Shelley, Mark David (Valerie) Harris, Sarah Beth (John) Martinez;  grandchildren Phillip Pirtle, Mitchell Harris, Megan Harris, Benjamin Shelley, Lucas Shelley, Chelsea Hartman, Katherine Harris; and eight great grandchildren.  Visitation will be from 10 am to 12 pm Fri. Sept. 1 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with funeral services there at 12 pm.  Burial will be in West Ridge Park Cemetery.
