Amy Sue
Knapp
May 24, 1959 – August 24, 2022
Amy Sue Knapp, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, died on August 24, 2022 of injuries sustained in a car accident near her home in Pittsboro, Indiana.
Amy was born May 24, 1959 in Des Moines, Iowa, grew up in Urbandale, Iowa, and graduated from Urbandale High School in 1977. She went on to earn a degree from the University of Iowa in 1982 and worked as a registered nurse with University of Iowa Hospitals and St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she specialized in neonatal intensive care. Later, Amy provided in-home nursing care for children and families in the Indianapolis area.
In 1983 Amy married James K. Knapp in Iowa City, Iowa. In 1987, after the birth of their first child, they moved to Indianapolis and then Pittsboro, Indiana, where they established their home. Amy and Jim raised four children, and they delighted in having three grandsons living nearby in recent years. They owned and managed a musical instrument business, Knapp Music Company, for 25 years.
Amy and Jim are members of Grace Fellowship Church in Avon, Indiana. Amy loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and served her Church and community in many ways. Her love for her family and friends reflected the beauty and grace that was foundational to her faith.
From an early age, Amy was light on her feet. She ran, tumbled, and eventually focused on competitive gymnastics, both in high school and college competition. The disciplines she developed on those teams followed into every area of her life. She ran, hiked, biked and clogged to stay fit and happy. She loved to move.
Amy's sewing room, favorite chair, and travel bag overflowed with fabric scraps, embroidery thread and artwork in progress. Lucky friends found a chorus of bright fabric birds or a personalized card in their mailbox, a handmade bag under the Christmas tree, or a warm quilt gifted "just because." Amy's hands were rarely idle. One of her dear friends commented, "Amy's work is in every room of our house, and so is she."
Amy's survivors include her husband, James Knapp; children Elise (Bruce) Phillips, Emily (John) Knapp Shambaugh, Jacob Knapp, Josie (Quinton) Thompson; parents James and Virginia North; father-in-law Charles Knapp; sister Nancy North (John Gaddo); brother-in-law Robert Knapp (Becky); grandchildren Elliott Phillips, Graham Phillips and Kent Phillips.
A private family burial service will take place on September 16, 2022. Public visitation will take place Saturday, September 17 from 1-4 p.m. at Grace Fellowship Church (6121 E County Road 100 South), Avon, Indiana.
