Obituary

Arthur Laurens Ray Maynard
90 of Brownsburg/Avon, IN passed away the morning of Sept. 7, 2012 at Brownsburg Health Care, Brownsburg, IN. Ray was born Aug. 9, 1922 in Columbia, SC to Arthur and Mattie Maynard and grew up in McBee, SC. He married his beloved Oreane Mitchum in Columbia on May 29, 1944. She survives as do his daughter, Rae Anne (Jim) Hamp of Peoria, IL; his son, Kenneth (Tami) of Brownsburg; two grandchildren, Mitch and Renee Maynard of Brownsburg; his brother-in-law and sister-in law, M.O. and Norma Mitchum of Columbia, SC; 4 nieces, a nephew, 3 grand dogs and a grand cat.
Ray graduated from Clemson University with a B.S. in engineering and received his MBA from Drexel University. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during WWII, primarily in the India theater, attaining the rank of captain. After the war, he was involved in engineering, sales and marketing work for General Electric in Schenectady, NY and Philadelphia, PA. He then moved to Peoria, IL where he held managerial positions in engineering, sales, marketing, and corporate planning and development for WABCOs mining and truck business. From there, he relocated to Indianapolis where he became general manager of marketing services for FMC Linkbelt. When Linkbelt became PTC, he served as vice president and general manager of its marketing services division. After his retirement from PTC, he was director of sales and marketing for IMMI in Westfield, IN.
Recognizing his extraordinary talents, Ray was mentored by McBee High School's principal who insured he had the opportunity to attend college. In turn, throughout his career he mentored many in whom he recognized potential. In all his endeavors, he demonstrated his belief that persistence and determination, more than talent, genius, or education, are the keys to success. A man with a sometimes brusque demeanor but a tender heart, if he encountered someone he felt might benefit from his assistance, he did all he could to be of service.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30am Mon. Sept. 10 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, following a private interment. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Lebanon Church of Christ, 1204 Indianapolis Ave., Lebanon, IN 46052 where Ray was a member; his alma mater, Clemson University, P.O. Box 1889, Clemson, SC 29603; or the Alzheimer's Association with the hope that one day no family will endure the ravages of that vicious disease.
