Barbara Jean
Mayhew
April 26, 1929 – December 17, 2022
Our dear mother Barbara Mayhew of Kentland, Indiana sadly left us Saturday December 17, 2022. She leaves behind three children; Cheryl Chamberlain (Ron), Mark Mayhew (Susie) and Julie Armstrong (David), sister; Jane Lyons, eight grandchildren; Laura Bashor (Dan), Amy Supernaw (Kywin), Patrick Chamberlain (Jenna), Jonathan Mayhew (Kirsten), Kristen Kuntz (Jeremy), Allison Armstrong, Christopher Armstrong (Brandi), Matthew Armstrong, and 19 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death is her husband of 70 years, Leland Mayhew, an infant son, her parents Maurice and Bernadette Farrell, and two brothers, Jim and Dave Farrell.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kentland, Ade Neighbors Club, Red Hat Society, and most recently was president of the resident council at her assisted living facility.
Barbara was born April 26 th , 1929 in Goodland, Indiana. She graduated from Goodland High School in 1947. She married Leland Mayhew July 24, 1948 at St. Peter and Paul Church in Goodland. Barbara lived her whole life in southern Newton County. She grew up on a small farm across the street from the historical site of the Orchard Lake Stock Farm. She enjoyed telling stories of the historical nationally known livestock farm and its many visitors. She and her husband Leland farmed and ran a family business together in the Kentland area for many years. She enjoyed raising their family on the family farm. She took great pride in her garden, cooking and canning the many things she grew. She enjoyed having company and always made sure that family and friends never left hungry. She enjoyed passing on her favorite recipes and traditions to her children and grandchildren.
Barbara always loved children. After her children were of school age, she became a teacher's aide and worked at Kentland, Brook and Goodland Elementary Schools for many years. She took a special interest in helping the students and teachers she worked with day-to-day.
Later, when she and Leland moved from the farm to Kentland, she continued that love for children and opened a daycare in their home. She got great satisfaction in that and was affectionately known as Grandma Barb by many of those families.
The last few years, Barbara has been a resident at Copper Trace Assisted Living in Westfield, IN. She has met many wonderful people and has developed some very fond friendships.
Barbara loved her faith, family, friends, and her community. She always held these things in high regard and instilled these same values in her children.
Visitation for Barbara will be 9:00 to 11:00am CST Wednesday December 21,2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 409 East Allen Street, Kentland with funeral mass at 11:00am CST. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Kentland.
