Bernard J. Althoff "Bernie", 88 yrs. 1 month, Brownsburg, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2024.
He was the youngest son of Ben C. and Agnes M. (Hoedebecke) Althoff. He was born July 8, 1936 in Teutopolis, Illinois.  He was a graduate of Cathedral High School and served in the U.S. Army. He worked at his father's Brownsburg Appliance & Hardware and became co-owner with his brother in 1962, then became sole proprietor of Avon Hardware until his retirement in 1998.  He was married October 27, 1962 to Sandra T. Putnam at St. Jude Catholic Church. He was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church where he enjoyed serving as an usher for Sunday services. He was also a member of the Brownsburg American Legion.  He was preceded in death by his son Robert Althoff; parents Ben and Agnes Althoff; siblings Leroy Althoff, Mary Ann Robards and Kathleen Taylor.  Survivors include his loving wife Sandra Althoff; daughters Lisa (Rod) Richards, Patricia (Jeff) Costello; sons Richard (Sally) Althoff, Jeff (Stephanie) Althoff; daughter-in-law Lisa Althoff; grandchildren Sarah (Norah), Kristen, Alexander (Carlyn), Matthew, Benjamin, and Garrett; several generations of nieces and nephews.  Visitation will be from 10 am to 12 pm Fri. Aug. 16 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg.  Funeral Mass will follow at St. Malachy Catholic Church at 12:30 pm.  Burial will be in St. Malachy Cemetery.
