Obituary

Brent Eric Barnhisel, 57, of Brownsburg, Indiana, passed away on December 2, 2024, at home after a brief illness. Brent was born on November 2, 1967, in Peru, Indiana, to Dennis and Cathey (Rush) Barnhisel. He grew up in rural Indiana working alongside his father and grandfather on their family farm. He earned two degrees from his beloved Purdue University (Agricultural Systems Management and Industrial Engineering). Brent also earned an MS in Operations Management at Kettering University. He worked several years in a manufacturing setting doing engineering work before starting his own business. He owned and operated Hoops & Ladders, Rhino Sports of Indiana and Rosco's Rentals.

He married Lana Agness in 1997 and kept her laughing for 27 years with his unique sense of humor. Brent was the kind of guy who could fix literally anything and, in fact, fixed the screen door at Lana's apartment when he arrived for their first date. Their daughter Erica was the light of his life and completed their family. He loved supporting her at every volleyball game and choir concert while she grew up and spending time with her any time he could. They enjoyed hiking, sharing music, watching "The Nightmare Before Christmas" together and countless father-daughter chats.

Brent loved IndyCar racing and especially cherished attending the Indy 500 each year. He was an avid Purdue basketball fan and attended several games each year with his brother-in-law, Lance Agness. Brent was outside whenever he could be, spent time traveling with his family and friends, and loved a good steak on the grill shared with neighbors, buddies, and friends. He restored a 1931 Ford Model A with his father which now sits in the showroom of the Ford dealership in Naples, Florida. For years he attended "Camp Lucy" over July 4th with childhood friends and made life-long memories. More recently he took hunting and fishing trips with friends and treasured those times of camaraderie. He was one of the original members of the St. Richard's Episcopal School Dads Club and enjoyed serving the school community with them. He was funny, kind, always willing to lend a hand or loan out his trailer, and did so with a smile and a smart remark. His final months were spent squeezing all the joy from life that he could while displaying his deep abiding faith in God's saving grace and encouraging others to do the same.

Brent is survived by his wife, Lana Agness Barnhisel; his daughter, Erica Barnhisel; his mother, Cathey Barnhisel; his sister, Lisa (Paul) Petrass;  and countless friends who enjoyed his engaging spirit and quick wit. He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Barnhisel. The family would like to thank the dear friends and family who have been so supportive in countless ways over the past six months. He will be so missed!

A Celebration of Brent's life will be held at the Church @ Main, 1500 E. Main Street, Brownsburg, at 2 pm on December 21.  The family will receive visitors an hour before the service and at a reception following the service at the Barnhisel home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bair Lake Bible Camp at www.blbc.com or the charitable organization of your choice.
