Brooke Hilary
Feister
May 29, 1940 – December 17, 2024
Brooke Hilary (Meeder) Feister peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 17th in Avon, Indiana, at the age of 84. Brooke was born in Pontiac, Michigan on May 29, 1940 and moved to Speedway, Indiana during her childhood. Brooke graduated from Speedway High School in 1958 and Butler University in 1962. Brooke shared her passion for mathematics as a teacher at North Central High School until retirement in 1995. Following her love for the west, Brooke immediately moved to Red Lodge, Montana with husband Richard O'Brien that summer. As most are familiar, Brooke was most at home in the mountains of Montana where she lived for 22 years. Brooke led a very active outdoor lifestyle, and spent the majority of her time camping, hiking, and skiing in the nearby mountain ranges around Red Lodge. She was however most at peace in Yellowstone National Park – a majestic landscape that she enthusiastically shared with our family on countless trips to visit "Memaw". With every trip, we were further emersed in the nature of the west, including wide open spaces, fresh mountain air, Montana blue sky, every type of wildlife, and endless wildflowers that lined the hiking trail. She and Richard also enjoyed extensive travel in their years together to Africa, Australia, Chile, and multiple trips to Alaska. Brooke often joked that she was never going to 'sit around in a rocking chair' and upon the suggestion of taking a rest as she got older, she commented that 'naps are for old people'. She was true to her word and lived a very full and active life. Brooke was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Indianapolis during her younger years, followed by Messiah Lutheran Church of Red Lodge while in Montana, and most recently joined Messiah Lutheran Church of Brownsburg in 2017.
Brooke had a kind gentle heart throughout her life and was perhaps best known for her beautiful smile. While her dementia gradually enveloped her memory and speech in the recent few years, she never hesitated to share her smile. It became her common currency of communication as her cognitive abilities continued to decline. At her passing, Brooke was surrounded by the love and support of her adult children, their families, and the remarkable staff of her assisted living facility during her final hours. She is now in God's eternal care and grace, and most importantly, is reunited with her memory.
Brooke is preceded in death by her husband, Richard O'Brien, and survived by her three adult children: Thomas Allen Feister (Tricia), James Andrew Feister (Elizabeth), and Hilary Feister-Bell (Arnold). Brooke is also survived by her 5 grandchildren: John Feister (Nadia), Madeline Feister-Duke (Russell), Alex Bell, Maxwell Feister, and Ryan Bell and two greatgrandchildren Theo Feister and Liam Feister.
Donations in her loving memory may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church of Brownsburg at www.messiahelca.com or the Greater Yellowstone Coalition at www.greateryellowstone.org
