Obituary

Carol Shattles Hooker
79, was born in Bridgeport, CT to Henry S. Shattles and Marie Churko Shattles. Carol was raised in Milford, CT, where she was valedictorian of her class at Jonathan Law High School. She graduated from MIT in 1967 with a B.S. in Chemistry, and Purdue University with an M.S. in Biochemistry. She worked briefly with the Institute for Psychiatric Research at I.U. Medical School, then began a 30 year career at Eli Lilly, which included research in broncho dilators (Jerry Fleisch), insulin receptors (May Root), and stints with Elizabeth Arden, glandular insulin, computational analyses, scientific library, and research acquisition.
Carol has been active as a master gardener, Eagle Creek Park volunteer, and MIT admissions counselor, but her passion was personal computing, where she was a resource for colleagues, friends, and family alike. Carol was unfailingly generous with her time and talent, receiving the Bronze Beaver Award and George Morgan Awards from the MIT Alumni Association. She worked with the MIT Class of '67 website, and supported the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library, WFYI, The Nature Conservancy, and MIT.
Carol is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert P. Hooker, sons Perry (Sarah Coffield), Lewis (Maryn Wright), beautiful grandsons Lionel and Beto, brother Sam, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. Memorial contributions in Carol's name may be made to your favorite charity. Carol will be missed.
Celebration of Carol's life will be held Sunday, May 17th, from noon to 4:00pm at the Garden Terrace on the grounds of Newfields Indianapolis Museum of Art, 4000 N. Michigan Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46208
