Charles H. “Chuck” Miller
Born January 25th, 1939, in Gary, Indiana, he was the only child of Harold L. and Stella M. Miller, who are both deceased. He is preceded in death by his wife Karen, who went to be with the Lord on November 13th, 2017. Chuck attended Trinity Lutheran Church and graduated from Horace Mann High School in Gary in 1957. He attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, from 1957 to 1961, where he was manager of the Purdue Swimming Team from 1958 to 1960 under Coach Richard “Pappy” Pappenguth.
Chuck left Purdue in 1960 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he honorably served from 1961 to 1964. He was a member of the U.S. Marine detachment aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CVA 63) from 1961 to 1963, and he was in charge of the Marine Honor Guard for President John F. Kennedy when we was aboard USS Kitty Hawk with the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff and the members of the SEATO in 1962. He was a rifle range coach at Camp Pendleton, California, from 1963 to 1964, when released from active duty as a Corporal (E4).
He returned to Purdue and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Forestry in 1966. Chuck married Karen A. Miller née Macy at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1966; they had no children. He worked as a utility forester at Public Service Indiana (PSI) in both Kokomo and Plainfield, Indiana, from 1966 to 1985, being promoted to System Forester in 1978, when he and Karen moved to their last home in Danville, Indiana.
While in Kokomo, he and Karen were members of Our Savior Lutheran Church, where he served on the Evangelism Committee. After resigned from PSI in 1985, Chuck accepted the position of Division Line Cleaning Supervisor at Indianapolis Power and Light Company (IPL), a position he held until retiring in 2001. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters (SAF), the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), President of the Indiana Arborist Association (IAA) in 1971, and received the IAA Meritorious Service Award in 1983. Following retirement, Chuck worked as a salesman at Vine & Branch Landscape Company in Carmel, Indiana, from 2001 to 2006. He also served as a volunteer at Hendricks Community Hospital (now Hendricks Regional Health) in Danville. With his wife Karen, Chuck became a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church (CELC) in Brownsburg, Indiana, in 1986, where he served as President and Deacon, and was a member of the Outreach Team for many years. He was a member of the CELC men’s Saturday morning Breakfast Club Bible Study Group, and also joined the church choir in 2014.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, May 22nd from 10 am to 11 am at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 701 E Tilden Dr, Brownsburg, IN 46112, with memorial services at the same location at 11 am. Inurnment will follow at Brownsburg Cemetery.
