Craig Seiler
Penwell
November 26, 1946 – March 22, 2025
Craig Seiler Penwell of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on March 22, 2025, at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis, following a brief but courageous fight with cancer. Craig was born November 26, 1946, to the late Florence and George V. Penwell.
Craig was born and raised in Pana, Illinois, where he was the second of three children. He enjoyed his fair share of fun and loved reliving stories of his childhood antics with his sister, Georganne "Jan" (Penwell) Nollman, brother Robert "Bobby" Penwell, and cousin, Neil Perkins. It was also in his hometown of Pana that he befriended and asked his childhood friend and sweetheart, Janet (Brewer) Penwell to go steady. Craig graduated from Pana High School in 1968 and went on to graduate from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. Janet and Craig married on March 10, 1968. He proudly served in the Infantry Division of the Illinois National Guard from 1968 to 1974.
Craig and Janet had two children, Tricia and Craig, Jr. "Butch". In 1976, they relocated their family to Indianapolis where Craig accepted a job with American United Life Insurance as an underwriter. He was later recruited by and took a position with J.F. Molloy & Associates in Indianapolis. Craig was a hard worker and smart thinker. Together, he and his friend and business partner, Dave Blanford, grew and expanded Molloy into a strong and thriving business because of the passion and care they had for clients and employees. Craig retired in 2005.
Craig loved being around people. He could light up a room with laughter. He loved generously and was a wise advisor to family on everything. He truly wanted to help whenever called upon. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, classic country western films, 50's and 60's music, and Elvis. He loved a good hand of poker and made sure each of his grandkids knew how to play the game. Craig was happiest when he was surrounded by family. He and Janet faithfully followed their grandchildren all around the state to watch them compete in athletics and fine arts competitions. He loved sharing his farm in Illinois with his grandkids and extended family where every year, they gathered to hunt, fish, and play a hand or two of poker. He loved visiting with everyone who traveled from around the Midwest to join the annual Labor Day family reunion. He was the patriarch of the Penwell Family and coined by one cousin as "The Mayor of Labor Day."
Craig is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet (Brewer) Penwell, sister, Georganne "Jan" Nollman, brother Bob (Karen) Penwell, daughter Tricia (Gunnar) Reed, son Craig (Heather) Penwell, Jr., grandchildren Duncan (Lizzie) Reed, Hillary Reed, Tanner Penwell, Elisa Penwell, great-granddaughter Addison Reed, and his three-legged rescue poodle, Buddy.
A memorial service for Craig will be 1pm Saturday April 26, 2025, at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with memorial visitation from 11am to 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Dover Christian Church, 955 SR 75, Lebanon, IN 46052.
