May 12, 1944 – January 29, 2025
David R. Hayes, born on May 12, 1944 in Lebanon, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on January 29th, 2025, in Danville, Indiana. He was raised in Lizton, IN and resided in Brownsburg, IN for the majority of his life.
David was the son of the late Ralph and Arletta (Hicks) Hayes and the eldest of five siblings: Janet (late David) Mayfield, James (Debbie) Hayes, Margie (Dick) Myers, and the late Steven Hayes. In 1981, he married Patricia (Jones) Hayes, with whom he shared a loving life and family. Together, they raised two children: Anthony (Amy) Church and Leah (Greg) Simon. David was also a proud grandfather to Abigail Church, Alexander (Loren) Church, Rachel Simon, and Garrett Simon, as well as a great-grandfather to Charlie Diana Marie Church. He was the uncle to 12 nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, David honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he pursued a career as a skilled carpenter and retired as a dedicated member of the Central Midwest Carpenters Local Union 758/301.
David's love for the Indianapolis 500 was unmatched-he was an avid fan, collector, and a charter member of the Indy 500 Collectors Club. His passion for history and craftsmanship was also evident in his involvement with the Hendricks County Antique Tractor Club, where he was a lifetime member. Additionally, he was a member of the Brownsburg American Legion Post 331 and the VFW Post 3880 in Lake Placid, Florida.
His family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many caregivers who provided support, especially Rose and Heather of Home Healthcare of Brownsburg. David's legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will live on in the hearts of his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory bring comfort and peace to those he leaves behind.
Visitation will be from 1pm to 3pm Wednesday February 5 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with funeral services there at 3pm. Burial with military honors will follow at Lizton K of P Cemetery in Lizton, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church in Brownsburg, IN.
