Eliza E.
Norris Grubb
May 1, 1923 – September 10, 2019
Eliza E. Norris Grubb
96, Brownsburg, passed away at Wellbrooke of Avon retirement home on September 10, 2019. She was born Liza (later recorded officially as Eliza) Dawson in Sissonville, West Virginia on May 1, 1923. During WWII, she joined the Women's Army Corps, where new friends, thinking Eliza was short for Elizabeth, nicknamed her the more modern Betty (like movie star Betty Grable at the time). The nickname stuck. In 1945, her portrait was featured in the Are WACs Beautiful column in the San Francisco base newspaper. She met John A. Norris, a tall handsome man from southern Indiana, while he was an Air Force staff sergeant who was training airplane mechanics on how to maintain and troubleshoot the P-38s. They married at a Lutheran church in Denver, Colorado in 1945. Betty and John moved to Brownsburg where they raised daughter Mrs. Carol (Dave) Beard of Appleton, WI and son Glenn Norris of Indianapolis, IN. John Norris preceded his lovely wife in death in October 1973. In 1974, Betty married Kenneth Grubb, longtime family friend who preceded her in death in June 1990. She is survived by her brother Kenvil Ulysses (Lorraine) Dawson of Poca, WV and two half-brothers Freeman (Shirley) Crowder of Amelia, OH and Lewis Crowder of Gallipolis, OH. She was preceded in death by her sister Virginia (Dick) Beckner and her brother Clyde (Virgie) Dawson. Betty was known for her amazing gardens on the corner lot, and rose-covered archways at the picket fence at each side of the house in Brownsburg, Indiana. Visitation will be from 11 am to 1 pm on Tues. Sept. 17 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with funeral services there at 1 pm. Burial will be in Brownsburg Cemetery. Flowers are welcome.
