Charlie enjoyed being with his family and loved taking them camping and fishing. He loved God and lived what he believed. His deep faith in God drew many people to know Him and his calm reassurance and demeanor helped guide so many in their faith and along their different paths of life. Some fun memories of his life include the following:
· His brother, Jack, remembers fishing with Charlie on the bank of a lake when all of a sudden he heard a splash and Charlie disappeared, leaving his hat floating in the water. Their dad had to jump in after him. They had lots of fun getting into trouble all the time.
· His wife, Lorna, remembers all of the fantastic camping trips we enjoyed to Alaska, Yellowstone, and across Colorado. He was the best father and had the greatest smile and laugh. He had a singular wit and sense of humor, was the love of my life, and led me to the Lord.
· His daughter, Karen, remembers how he knew so much about how things worked. A recent bit of advice was to plan experiments carefully, then to brainstorm what might possibly go wrong, because it well might. He was a firm believer in being prepared for everything and in keeping safety a priority. He would do anything for you, even if it meant wading across the slipperiest river in Idaho to rescue his daughter who had fallen all the way across that river to the other side but managed not to break her fishing pole. (I love you Dad!)
· His daughter, Joanne, remembers even when the math book threatened to win, his patience never failed, and he wouldn't give up trying to help you until you got it. He was so proud of all of us and never failed to tell us so. Also, never bet dad there isn't chocolate ice cream in the freezer-cuz dad never bets unless he knows he can win. I will always be able to fix things with duct tape and just a bit of rope because of you, dad.
· His son, Emet, remembers him as his hero-the one who never gave up on him even if you had given up on yourself. And, man, could he install a clutch after you messed it up six ways to Sunday!-he had the patience of a saint. He also took me to every air show and indulged my love of aviation and flying, even though he himself hated to fly. One of my fondest memories was being able to take my dad on one of my airline flights, putting him and my mom in first class, and being the Captain of his flight. When I was making my PA announcement before the flight I told everyone that there were two celebrities on our flight in first class. My mom and my Dad! Everyone on the plane took their turn greeting them and thanking him for his military service as they deplaned from the flight.
· His son, David, remembers learning to fly-fish with dad and discovering the joy in the river as well as how to become a man of God and deacon in the church. Dad didn't say much, but whenever we were fishing he would bring you over and tell you exactly where to put your line to catch a fish If you were having a bad day.
