Evonne M.
Sutton
June 10, 1944 – July 25, 2023
Evonne Sutton, 79, left us on July 25, 2023, with her family by her side in Whitestown, Indiana.
Evonne, born on June 10, 1944, in Mandeville, Jamaica, she was the cherished child of Arnold and Mazie Powell. She was blessed with three siblings: a brother named Gilbert, and two sisters named Barbara and Yvonne, whom she held dear in her heart. Evonne would embark on a remarkable journey that encompassed a profound impact on others.
She began her educational path at Mount St. Joseph Academy where she nurtured a passion for teaching. Later, she joined the institution as a dedicated teacher, making a lasting impression on her students. Continuing her professional growth, Evonne transitioned to the role of secretary to Cecil Charlton one of the longest-serving mayors in Jamaica at Manchester Parish Council, where she displayed her exceptional skills and commitment to service.
With a deep sense of devotion, she committed herself to The Salvation Army and pursued her avocation with unwavering dedication. Evonne's longstanding membership in The Salvation Army exemplified her profound faith and spiritual connection which she embraced with heartfelt passion and represented an important aspect of her life.
She began dating Carl Sutton Sr, and their love culminated in marriage on July 4, 1970. They joyfully welcomed four children into their lives: Shelley, Simone, Claudine, and Carl Sutton Jr. Evonne proved herself to be a devoted and nurturing mother, providing love and care for her children. Alongside her duties as a wife and mother, she assumed the responsibility of caring for her aging parents until their deaths. Evonne's love for her family knew no bounds. She displayed a motherly affection for a lot of her children's friends, always extending a warm welcome to people in her home.
Evonne joined Carl and became a devoted member of the Wesley Mandeville Methodist Church, united in their faith and a deep sense of devotion and commitment to the community. Apart from her deep affection for her family, Evonne had a genuine passion for traveling and exploring new places. She delighted in visiting various destinations, in the US, Canada, England and the Caribbean. Eventually, Evonne and Carl made the decision to move to Indiana, drawn by the desire to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In no time, they discovered a warm and embracing community at Calvary United Methodist Church in Brownsburg, Indiana, where they felt right at home. With enthusiasm and love, she wholeheartedly embraced her grandma's duties, finding immense joy in being a grandmother. Her heart swelled with affection for her thirteen grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband, Carl Sr., her children Shelley, Simone, Claudine, Carl Jr., and her grandchildren Nichole, Harrison, Ellis Jr., Tylor, Nahtecia, Jayda, Jayden (Twins), Gabrielle, Nathaniel, Enzo, Maximus (Twins), Olivia, and the newest addition, Sasha Evonne, who was lovingly named after her. Evonne was an extraordinary woman, and her absence will be deeply felt by everyone who had the privilege of spending time with her. She leaves behind cherished memories that will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be from 12 pm to 1 pm Tues. Aug. 8 at Calvary United Methodist Church, Brownsburg, with funeral services there at 1 pm.
