Obituary

Frederick "Jack" Schweibold November 8, 1935 – November 27, 2025.  Jack Schweibold – experimental test pilot, record-setter, Member of the Indiana Aviation Hall of Fame, spiritual giant – had his final flight, destination the Lord Jesus Christ side, Thanksgiving evening surrounded by family and filled with God's incredible spiritual blessings proclaiming his presence, preparing for, guiding, and embracing this faithful servant's arrival.  For the family, it was a beautifully, wondrous, and humbling testimony of God's will allowing final rewardingly rich family memories reflecting Jack's legacy of God, Family, and Faith.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, where a 12-year-old kid's first ride in his uncle's Luscombe 8C seaplane lit the fuse. He studied engineering at Ohio State and the University of Toledo, then ROTC launched him straight into the Air Force Academy. At twenty-one he graduated third in his cadet flight class-wings pinned, destiny locked. Four years active duty followed, mostly rotorcraft: Bell H-13s, Sikorsky H-19s, Vertol H-21s. He logged sea and mountain rescues, and test flights across California in everything from F-89s to C-54s, always bringing crews home alive-even when odds said the academy class wouldn't see twenty-nine. God's grace, he'd say, and he meant it. With his wife Sharon and their first sons Scott and Mark, that grace steered him out of the Air Force prior to Vietnam-era combat, then straight to Chicago Helicopter Airways in 1960. Civilian seats felt safer for raising kids. In 1962, Allison Turbine Engine Division of General Motors snatched him up as chief test pilot and late that year his 3rd son, Brad was born. There he was responsible for the experimental flight test development of the first prototype light observation helicopters with Allsion's turbine engines, shattered thirty-five FAI world records-twenty-six still standing, like that 1,739-mile closed-course sprint-and survived 295 forced landings without incident. He landed on ninety percent of America's 14,000-foot peaks and flew from the Alps to the Outback, grinning the whole way. He established many of the rotorcraft industry's legacy safety standards even pioneering helicopter instructor certification courses with Helicopter Association International (HAI).  His professional accomplishments are staggering, but faith came louder with his life's story detailed in his autobiography "In the Safety of His Wings."  Inside and outside the cockpit, Jack's compass was Christian faith. Teacher at Bethesda Baptist, Elder at College Park, and finally attending Cornerstone Bible Church.  Aviation took him round the world; ministry kept him grounded. Family? Priority one. He retired from test pilot stardom and dedicated the second half his life to mentoring the spiritual lives of his expanding Christian family and many within the community.

Jack was preceded in death by his first son, S. Scott Schweibold; his parents, Henry and Jeanette Schweibold; and his brother, Robert (Karen) Cordrey.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Sharon Lee Schweibold, their children: Mark and Mindy Schweibold, and Brad and Nancy Schweibold.  Also, his grandchildren: Holly and Ted Nichols, Harmony DiMaggio, David and Courtney Schweibold, Steven and Cyndi Schweibold, Daniel and Stephanie Schweibold, Derek and Rachel Schweibold, Kelsey and Dave Harmer, Karin and David Marley, Kristin and Nick Fuss, and Kimmi Schweibold; 15 great-grandchildren; and, his sister Barbra Rock.
