Obituary

Frances B. Fisher, 96, died peacefully of natural causes on December 14, 2024, at her home in Brownsburg, IN. Mrs. Fisher was born May 9, 1928, near Monon in White County, Indiana, to Charles and Mildred (Burks) Blake. She graduated Wolcott High School in 1946 and then attended St. Luke's Nursing School in Chicago. Following an illness, she graduated from St. Joseph's Nursing School in South Bend, Ind., and passed Indiana boards to be licensed as a registered nurse. She then joined fellow classmates in working at a hospital in Los Alamos, N.M.

Mrs. Fisher returned to Indiana and on December 30, 1950, she married Richard B. Fisher. The couple were married for 69 years until his death in 2020.

After enlisting in the U.S. Army, the couple lived first in Franklin, Ind., while he was stationed at Fort Atterbury and then in Huntsville, Ala., at Redstone Arsenal. The couple returned to Indianapolis in 1952 after the birth of their first child. They lived on the west side of Indianapolis for the next 30 years while Richard worked as an engineer at GM/Allison Engine Company. Mrs. Fisher cared for her growing family and worked part-time as a nurse. When the children were older, she worked at Methodist Hospital, primarily in the Children's Pavilion.

By 1970, Mrs. Fisher began attending Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and earned a bachelor's degree in nursing to expand her career opportunities. She was then hired as charge nurse for Southwest Health Center from 1974 until she retired in 1987. The couple moved near Eagle Creek Reservoir in 1982 and to Brownsburg in 2018.

Mrs. Fisher was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (May 23, 2020), her sister Madelyn R. Mathew (April 25, 2012), her sister-in-law Beverley Stockment (September 30, 2020) and her daughter-in-law George Ann Fisher (January 4, 2024).

She is survived by three children: James Fisher of Brownsburg, Ann (Kevin) Lees of Georgetown, Maine, and Thomas (Tanya) Fisher of Lebanon, Ind.

Mrs. Fisher is also survived by two granddaughters: Amanda (Justin) Capps and Abigail Fisher, and seven great-grandchildren: Cole, Allison, Braden, Dillon, Emma, Logan and Gavin Capps. She is also survived by honorary granddaughters Erin Plank and Holly Spaulding, her sisters-in-law Shirley Cooper and Luann (Jim) Keiser, and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

Mrs. Fisher was a 65-year member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Haughville neighborhood of Indianapolis. She was active in Holy Trinity's chapter of St. Vincent de Paul Society, food pantry, and warehouse, and she made house calls for many years. She also faithfully helped with baking potica until Holy Trinity closed in 2014, and she then became an active member of St. Malachy Church in Brownsburg.

Mrs. Fisher will be entombed in a private ceremony at West Ridge Park Cemetery in Indianapolis. A memorial Mass will be celebrated with friends and family at St. Malachy Church on December 30, 2024 at 11:00 am.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society (3001 E 30th St, Indianapolis, IN 46218) or St. Malachy Church (9833 E County Road 750 N, Brownsburg, IN 46112).
