Obituary

Helen C. Graham, 94, Brownsburg, died Jan. 14 shortly after her birthday celebration on Jan 11. She was a remarkable lifelong homemaker dedicated to her family and her faith. Helen was a devoted member of Bethesda Baptist Church. Helen was born in Delhi, Louisiana on January 11, 1924. She is predeceased by her parents, Eva and Commodore Upton and 5 sisters, Catherine Futrell, Evelyn Freeman, Dorothy Saunders, Edith Levenson and Muriel Kramer; and brother, Charles Upton. Clyde Upton is her surviving brother. Family was everything to Helen. She married Gerard Graham in 1946 and had four children The Graham's lived in several Midwestern cities. In 1954, Helen and Jerry moved to Brownsburg and raised their family. Helen and Jerry loved to travel and were a remarkable couple. Gerard Graham died on January 17, 2007. They both had and have a profound influence on their family. Survivors include the four children, Christine Smith (Raymond), Mike Graham (Cindy), Libby Moran (Mike) and Kenneth Graham (Linda); grandchildren, Lisa and Laura Smith, Karen Herrow (Ray), Nathan and Eric Traxler; great grandchildren Ellie and Nathaniel. Helen was an exceptional gardener who loved flowers. She was an excellent cook and passed on many recipes to family and friends. As her family grew, Helen's sewing skills were used to create clothes for children. She also combined sewing and creativity to make beautiful quilts. As an artist, she painted and created needlepoint works of art. Helen was an avid reader who favored fiction and the challenge of cross word puzzles. She loved to play cards and looked forward to many many games of the card game called Spite and Malicious that the family learned from Jerry's Mom, Floss Graham. She was often described as sweet, dedicated, compassionate, loving, remarkable and one of a kind. Visitation will be at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, on Sat. Jan 20 from 10 am to noon, with funeral services at noon. Burial will immediately following at Brownsburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda Baptist Church.
