HELEN L. LANE
92, Brownsburg, IN passed away August 27, 2014 in the home of only child and daughter, Sherry Price and under the care of Great Lakes Hospice. Born April 8, 1922 to Steven and Maggie Tudder in Lebanon, KY. Helen, the oldest, outlived two brothers and three sisters and each of their spouses. Helen spent her childhood in Corydon, IN and her adulthood in New Albany, IN until July of 1997 when she and her husband, Elmer, moved to Brownsburg, IN to live with Sherry. Within two weeks after the move, Elmer died of congestive heart failure. Helen and Sherry continued to live together until October 30, 2004 when Helen moved to Roland Manor to maintain her total wellbeing. After six months of adjusting, Helen had the best years of her life...making new friends, maintaining her independence, and keeping her rigorous walking schedule. The last move for Helen involved a hospital stay, a rehab stay and then back to live with Sherry on December 18, 2013. Helen worked for 18 years as a waitress at the Yankee Doodle Restaurant until the 1970's when she was employed at the Army Ammunition Plant in Charlestown, IN. Helen retired at age seventy and shortly after found that she had ovarian cancer. She was treated and never had any reoccurrence from this cancer. However on May 22, 2014 advanced esophageal cancer was discovered. Because of Helen's advanced dementia, Sherry was able to avoid telling Helen about the cancer. Helen would tell others that the reason she didn't die from the ovarian cancer was that God needed to get some things right in her life. Helen made changes in her life. Helen went down front for prayer from the top of the arena at the Indy 1999 Billy Graham Crusade. Helen chose to be rebaptized because she knew that she had not truly understood what she was doing before. Helen read through the Bible three times before the dementia set in. Helen was the "Cookie Lady" for the years 2001 thru 2004 for the DivorceCare Program at Connection Pointe Christian Church were she was a member. Helen had a heart for the divorced as she also had experienced one when Sherry was three. In the last weeks before her death, Sherry would question Helen about who Jesus is, what did He do for us and where she was going when she died. Helen maintained a peace through out her last eight months with Sherry with only the exceptions of problems related to the dementia. Helen always loved her family starting with her siblings by always helping them in whatever was their need. Helen always gave the best she knew how to her only child, Sherry. Then came the grandchildren...Beth Ann now married to Greg Strand of Indianapolis, Sally Ann now married to Damon Hoyda of Aurora, IL and Joseph Michael of Lexington, KY. Sally and Damon blessed her with Madison and Kamryn. And Joseph blessed her with Virginia and Marianne. Beth blessed her with six dogs and two cats :-) Helen's last days were occupied with looking at, sometimes kissing and saying sweet things to the pictures of her family. Funeral services will be 11am Friday September 5 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, IN with visitation from 9-11am before service. A graveside service will be at 2:30pm in the Sellersburg Cemetery.
