IRENE VIRGINIA CARLSON
Age 103, passed away Dec. 24, 2014 at Brownsburg Meadows, Brownsburg, IN. She was born August 11, 1911 in Bayboro, NC. Mrs. Carlson was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Arthur C. Carlson, in 1985; her parents Rufus and Caroline Harris; her brother Rufus Harris Jr. in 1988; sister Nina Rinschler in 1999. She is survived by her three children William Carlson (Marge), Ann Weiss (Hap), and Jean Fleenor. She had four grandsons Lance Carlson, Dale Carlson (Shelly), Bart Carlson (Amy), Kris Weiss; one granddaughter Kimberly Johnson (Brian). She had six great grandsons Kyle Carlson (Rebecca), Cody Carlson, Cory Carlson (Emily), Justin Carlson, Joshua Carlson, and Jason Johnson; one great granddaughter Kristina Irene Johnson and one great great grandson Gabriel Carlson. After she and her sister Nina completed High School, they left North Carolina for Nursing School in New York City. They both graduated from Bellevue School of Nursing. She married her "Connecticut Yankee" on a bright sunny Sunday afternoon September 9, 1934, under the large trees on the front lawn of the Carlson Farm in Roxburg, CT. She was an independent and determined person, whose nickname "Lead Foot" which took her driving across the USA visiting with family and friends. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, reading, cooking and baking. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren all have fond memories of her cookie tins and especially her "famous apple pies". Graveside services will be 10:30am Saturday January 3, 2015 at Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London, CT.
