Obituary

Jalene J. Howse

83, of Brownsburg, passed away October 3, 2019. Born on the family farm and raised in Deer Creek, Indiana, at an early age she found her life of music while taking piano lessons from music teacher Ruth Pettinger of Camden, Indiana. She and her younger sisters became a regionally famous musical trio, The Three J's, and appeared in numerous places with or without various other acts, including on different shows during the earlier days of television. She graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's of Arts in Business Adminstration from Ball State University after transferring credits from two years at Manchester College. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She pursued her musical career promptly via traveling abroad with two different USO (United States Overseas) tours after graduating from college, during the Bob Hope USO heydays, and went along to South Korea, Japan, and various places in Europe to entertain troops in service for the United States. During the 1960s and 1970s, she mingled her musical career, including performing multiple bands, with also doing various stints as a paralegal secretary for different law firms as well as working for judges. For nine years after the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis was first built in 1977, she performed in a chamber trio on the mezzanine of the open lobby atrium for the evening crowds. She was an organist for St. Marks Lutheran Church in Whitestown, Indiana, for a few years around the turn of the millenium. For over fifty years, she had been a music teacher at virtually every Indianapolis area music store that provided lessons, several periods teaching at multiple different studios simultaneously, with her last several years of teaching at R&R Music in Brownsburg. During several years of that prior time, she was the regional director of music lessons at all stores of the former prestigious Baldwin Piano Company headquartered on the northeast side of Indianapolis. She was also a former Board Director for the Indianapolis Musicians Local Union. She was a member of Connection Pointe Christian Church.
