Obituary

James N. Evans

After a life well-lived and full of love, James Nelson Evans, 78, of Indianapolis, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

Jim was born in Brazil Indiana to Nelson and Elizabeth Gage Evans. Everyone celebrates on Jim's birthday as it was New Year's Eve, 1946. Jim attended Van Buren High School and Indiana State University. He excelled at playing the trombone and played all through his school years. Jim was proud of his chosen career in teaching Biology at Brownsburg High School and later teaching Anatomy at Ivy Tech Community College. At one point Jim also started his own small microscope servicing business called MicroVision that he enjoyed for several years.

Jim had good times with hobbies like sailing on Eagle Creek Reservoir, fishing, birding, building with Legos, and loving his dog, Lucy. Together with his wife, Anne, Jim enjoyed annual trips to his favorite vacation spots: Sanibel Island, the Smoky Mountains and Saugatuck, MI. Jim loved cheering on the Colts and his Chicago Cubs. When not watching a game, you could find Jim sitting on his back deck, wearing his Cubs ball cap, smoking a cigar and enjoying a bit of bourbon.

Jim is survived by his wife of 18 years, Anne Sperry Evans. He also leaves behind his son, Jeremy, his daughter Jessica (Ben) Merrick, step-daughter Rachel (Alex) Edgecombe, and sister Susie (Chris) Pell. Jim has seven grandchildren: Stormy Evans, Evan and Natalie Merrick, Elizabeth Edgecombe, as well as Aiden Collins, Cade and Carden Stevenson. He has three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephew.

He will be sorely missed. Memorial Visitation will be from 4 pm to 7 pm Mon. May 12 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg.
