James Everett
Sering
January 7, 1938 – June 15, 2025
James E. Sering, 87, Brownsburg, passed away on June 15th, 2025. On January 7th, 1938, he was born in the back seat of a 1931 Ford on the way to the Crawfordsville hospital. He grew up in Jamestown and Advance before moving to Brownsburg before his freshman year of high school in 1952. He was the school's baseball, football, and basketball team manager all four years. His senior year, the football team had their first season with no losses. In the summers, Jim worked with his dad and his company, Sering & Wise Construction, building houses and neighborhoods around Hendricks County. James Court off Green Street south of Tilden was named for him.
After high school he attended Purdue University, receiving an associate's degree in Aviation Electronics Technology, and later a Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering. It was in his Purdue Chemistry class that he met his love of his life, Anne Noecker, and they married on September 3rd, 1960. While studying at Purdue, Jim also joined the Army Reserve and served 6 years during this time.
He hired on at P. R. Mallory and Co on East Washington Street of Indianapolis in 1967. He worked for Mallory in various capacities and locations, mostly in the Timers division until his retirement 33 years later in 2000. He was assigned to the company locations in Warsaw, NY, Frankfort, IN, and lastly at the Waterfront headquarters in Indianapolis. His longest tenure was as a quality control engineer, making sure the components they were building were to print. This included Jim coordinating the standards between their plants in Tennessee and New York. Anyone who knows Jim would understand why he would be in that position. He always strived at making sure things were done correctly. He also shared a US Patent with coworkers for designing a cam-operated timer test procedure. He stated he really loved his time there and all those he worked with.
While working at Mallory, he joined the Mallory Employee's Conservation Club in Mooresville, and served on the board for many years. While at the club he helped with improvements such as adding a heating system to the caretaker's cabin and building the garage for the clubhouse.
Jim served on the Brownsburg Parks Board for 10 years from about 1999 to 2009, and regularly attended town meetings to spar with the Town Council. His long-time neighbor Bob Wilson enjoyed writing about those sessions in the Brownsburg Week newspaper.
From his high school days of being a sports fan and team manager, he never stopped cheering for Purdue basketball, and was an Indianapolis Colts season ticket holder from day 1. He never missed a Hoosier Dome home game, even during the lean pre-Manning seasons. This lasted until after they won the Super Bowl, which he was able to see happen live in Miami in 2007.
After retirement, he focused on his love of working on cars full time. This hobby first began in high school when he rebuilt a 1932 Ford five window coupe with a hot-rodded Cadillac engine. During the 80s, he rebuilt his 1973 International truck into Little Dumper with his custom designed dump bed. After retirement he, along with his friends first restored a 1929 Stutz. Jim and his friends Dick Downing, John Schultheis, and Russ Eavey, loved nothing more than to have a problem they had to design their way out of. The restoration was so good, the Stutz was purchased and shipped to an owner in England. They also restored a Fairmont Speeder railroad two-seater, which was donated by the owner after it was completed to a railroad museum in New Mexico. Their last project together was to honor Jim's promise to his father and restore his 1950 Ford F1 truck originally purchased for the home building company. This total restoration down to the frame started in 2014 and finished in 2019. Jim was 81 when it was finished, and he began to slow down. In the last few years, he went back to working on Little Dumper to make some changes he had planned, and which he was still working on up until his final hospitalization.
Jim and Anne both had their own hobbies and interests but they always were together every night, for 63 years, until her passing in 2024. They are now together again.
He was preceded in death by his parents James Donald and Edna Hedge Sering; step-mother Crystal; sister Norma Swisher (John); and daughter Jamie Rae Hamilton. Survivors include sister Linda Dickson, step-sister Beverly Fleenor; sons James Maxwell (Tina) Sering, Russell Byron (Savannah) Sering; grandchildren Alex (Karissa) Tedrow, Annabelle Sering, Elliot Sering; great grandchildren Cora Ellen, Evie Rae.
Visitation will be from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Fri. June 20 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with funeral services there at 12:30 pm. Burial will be in Old Union Cemetery, Jamestown.
