Jay Nelson, 69, of Pittsboro, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 9, 2026.

Jay left a lasting mark on the residential construction industry through decades of dedication and craftsmanship. By day, he served as a Building Inspector for the Town of Brownsburg, and for 39 years he successfully operated his own drafting business. His knowledge, integrity, and attention to detail earned him the respect of colleagues and homeowners alike. Jay was also a proud member of the Indiana Association of Building Officials.

Outside of work, Jay treasured time spent with family and friends on the lake — a lifelong passion that brought him peace and joy. Whether hitting a hot lap across open water, watching the sun rise or set from the dock, or sharing laughter on the beach, the lake was where Jay felt most at home. Those moments will continue on in the memories of all who shared them, echoing each time a boat cuts across the water or a quiet morning settles over the lake.

Jay will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generous spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family. His legacy lives on not only in the homes he helped create, but in every ripple on the water and every gathering by the fire where his presence will always be felt.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Kay Nelson.

Jay is survived by his beloved wife, Robin; children Ashley (Nathan) Fletcher and Holden (Jessica) Nelson; Brothers Jeff and Phil Nelson and his baby sister, Stephanie Jones. He is cherished by his grandchildren, Madi, Jett, Hannah, Norah and Aaron. Memorial visitation will take place from 10am-12 Noon on Saturday January 24 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg with services to follow at 12 pm.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your charity of choice.
