John Lanier
Haynes
May 1, 1923 – January 16, 2024
In Loving Memory of John Lanier Haynes
John Lanier Haynes, born on May 1, 1923, in Lincolnton, GA, departed from this world on January 16, 2024, at the age of 100. His life was marked by a profound dedication to God, duty, a lasting commitment to family, and a love story that endured the test of time.
John's early years included graduation from the Academy of Richmond County in 1941, setting the stage for a remarkable journey ahead. Answering the call of duty, he enlisted in the Navy on December 8, 1941, following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He is a decorated WW2 hero, but remained humble in attitude. Throughout his military career, John exhibited courage and leadership, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve before his honorable retirement in 1965.
On July 9, 1946, John sealed a lifelong partnership by marrying Juanita Hunter in Rossville, GA. Their union spanned an incredible 71 years, creating a tapestry of shared experiences, enduring love, and unwavering support for one another, and for their family. Juanita was John's confidante and companion, standing by his side through the challenges and triumphs of life.
They were committed believers in Jesus Christ as Savior, and served faithfully their whole life. They traveled the world together, and with John's career in FAA, lived in many cities, including Beirut, Lebanon, Tokyo, Japan, and thirty-six years in Anchorage, Alaska.
John was a man of many talents. He was a pilot, a self-taught architect, and custom home builder. He published two books: Haynes-MacDonald Heritage Quest, and Frozen Fury, a narrative of his WW2 experience. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He rebuilt several small airplanes. He was handy with tools and repairs.
Best of all, John was a kind and loving father who taught his children to love God and to love others. He was a quiet man, full of wisdom. He loved watching his family interact with one another, and would sit quietly with a smile, small chuckles, and eyes that beamed with love.
John is survived by his daughter, Marie Miller, and her husband James of Danville, IN; son, John Lanier Haynes II, and his wife Sylvia of Fort Myers, FL; daughter, Renita Yahara, and her husband Robert of Elizabethtown, PA; and son, Robert Haynes, and his wife Cindy of Fishers, IN; 13 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren. Their family ties were woven with love, laughter, and the shared experiences that defined the Haynes legacy.
As we celebrate John Lanier Haynes' remarkable life, let us reflect on the legacy of a man whose sense of duty, love, and commitment enriched the lives of those around him. He leaves behind a cherished family and friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. May John and Juanita now find eternal peace reunited in a place beyond our earthly bounds. May their love story continue to inspire and serve as a reminder of the enduring power of love.
