Obituary

Judith Ann (Mosier) Luce, 81, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023. Born in Bloomington on August 9, 1942, Judy grew up in Selma, Indiana where she graduated from Selma High School before joining the Indiana Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma and working in the Business Office of Indiana Bell Telephone Company. In 1964 Judy married her longtime sweetheart, Ben Luce. They were blessed to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary on August 15th, which also marked nearly 70 years since they became smitten with one another in elementary school.

While Judy eventually worked in insurance, mortgages, and banking, she dedicated most of her time, and love, to being a devoted wife and homemaker, a loving, always present and involved mother, and ultimately an amazing and doting "Gee Gee" (grandmother).

Judy was a loving and giving person who enjoyed her flower gardens, painting, crafting, reading, parties that allowed her to indulge in her love of baking, cooking, and socializing, and spending time spoiling her grandchildren who were her biggest soft spot. She also had a soft spot for furry and feathered critters. She always had the most beautiful and colorful yard in the neighborhood and had a knack for reviving even the saddest looking of house plants. She was a self-taught painter of scenery and critters on canvas and other mediums, and of furniture reviving, painting, and repurposing. She loved arts and crafts and anything she could create with her nearly endless talent. She loved decorating and arranging her home to match the seasons and holidays.  Her home was always beautiful and well put together, but it was also always warm and inviting and full of love.

To pass on her love of baking she would often bake with her granddaughters, especially during holidays and summer break. No holiday was too small for her cut-out cookies with frosting. And no birthday was complete without either her perfect chocolate pie or a specially designed cake decorated by her for the lucky birthday girl.

Judy loved any reason to have people gather in her home. She put out amazing spreads on a beautifully decorated table (or two) and no one could ever say they were hungry when they left. She even had a catering business with a friend while living in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Her Halloween parties were not to be forgotten. Even her daughters' high school friends still remember the amazing, and sometimes scary parties she would host in October. No matter the reason you were in her home, you knew you were welcome, wanted, and loved.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents William "Bill" Mosier and Martha (Robertson) Mosier as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws. She is survived by her husband John "Ben" Luce, her daughters Lori (John) Tompkins and Lisa (Larry) Beiter, her granddaughters Abigail Beiter, Sarah Beiter, Cassie Tompkins, and Erin Beiter, her sister Janet (Mosier) Hudson, her nieces and nephews Kristine (Brent) Oldham, Kelly (Raymie) Erdos, Joe Luce, Matt (Marie) Luce, Kristopher (Faron) Luce, Whitney (Brad) Armstrong, and Weston (Kelsey) Luce. She will be remembered with love by many other family members.

There are so many other little things that made Judy one of the most special people in so many lives. She will be missed more than words can say, but our memories of her will live on always. We welcome any of your memories in the comment section below. A memorial service will be from 12 pm to 1 pm Oct. 1 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with memorial services there at 1 pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial donation to the local Audubon Society in Judy's name at www.amosbutleraudubon.org
