Obituary

Mark William “Bill” Patterson, 83, of Pittsboro, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home with his family on Monday, April 20, 2026. Bill was born in Terre Haute, IN on January 21, 1943 and was raised in Danville, IN. Bill was the loving husband to Mary Ann (Dickerson) Patterson and an incredible Father to Ann Wells (husband Scott) and Melissa Patterson, deceased. Loving his son-in-law like a son was so very easy for Bill. He was a wonderful mentor for his 3 grands, Katie, Jake, and Tommy Wells, through gentle teaching, years of cheering from the bleachers during sporting events, celebrating successes and many more milestones. Survivors include his sister, Susie Gibbs of Crawfordsville, brother, Chuck Patterson (wife Angie) of Southport, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his loving and adorable daughter Melissa and his parents, devoted teachers Maurice “Pat” Patterson and Dorothy Patterson Thompson.

In 1961, Bill graduated from Danville High School where he played basketball, baseball, and football. He met Mary Ann at ISU, and they married in 1963. In 1965, he received BS and Masters’ degrees from Indiana State Teachers’ College to teach “Industrial Arts, Physical Education, and Driver & Traffic Safety Education”. He was also active in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Brownsburg Junior High School was his first teaching job, where he coached 7th grade basketball. He later transferred to Brownsburg High School, where he coached golf and basketball. Bill was often seen behind the scorer’s bench at varsity basketball and football games. Teachers most often have summer employment, and, besides teaching Drivers’ Ed. during the summer, he worked for a local builder, building apartment complexes. Bill was part of the teachers’ summer painting crew, as well, and later joined with other teachers to build houses in the area. Bill lived by his parent’s belief: “Any job worth doing is worth doing well.” Bill’s reputation for creating, building, designing, and fixing became well known.

Bill was devoted to his students, never giving up on them. His career in the drafting classroom began with drawing boards and T-squares. Upon his request to BCSC, the Corporation brought computer aided drafting (CAD) into the classroom, thus earning Bill recognition for his outstanding contribution to the students as “teacher initiator and producer of innovative technology curriculum”. Thus, the classroom became a business, and the students were the architects. “Any job worth doing is worth doing well.” After 40 years of teaching, Bill retired in 2004 and volunteered with Sheltering Wings, drawing house plans. Caring for his yard and flower beds became his therapy, and the golf course, fishing lakes, and bonding with his buddies became his pastime. Thinking of others before thinking of himself was his mantra. Bill didn’t act for personal gain, but instead was mindful of needs of others. Never gave up. Always forgave and forgot. His family hopes to emulate that same strength.

Bill, Dad, Pop, job well done!
