Nancy Schoenewey Mellinger, 75, of Pittsboro, Indiana, passed away on June 26, 2026, at IU Health West Hospital after a protracted illness. She was born in Indianapolis on November 12, 1950, to Kenneth Harting (Kenny) Schoenewey and Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Montgomery. She attended Speedway Schools where she was a cheerleader, sang in the choir, participated in various clubs, and made many life-long friends.
From high school, Nancy pursued further study at Indiana University and Ball State University earning bachelor’s degrees in Management, Business, and Education. She worked in banking for many years and was introduced to her husband, Dave Mellinger, by a co-worker at American Fletcher National Bank. Nancy was a beloved instructor for Ivy Tech’s Blind Vendor Business School as well as a talented technical writer and instructor for First Class Solutions. She also worked as a tax preparer at H&R Block for several years.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Kenny, Betty, and beloved step-father, Mac McCoy. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, David Mellinger; children Jenny Eben (Chris Richey), Rusty (Tessa) Mellinger, Nick Mellinger (Sarah Kinder); sister Lynn Schoenewey Machen; brother-in-law Paul Mellinger; sister-in-law Jan Mellinger Stanley; grandchildren Alexis DeCosta, Dalyn DeCosta, Robby Mellinger, Mattie Mellinger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 7th, from 2 pm to 5 pm at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with funeral services to follow at 5 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation in Nancy’s memory to Little Red Door Cancer Agency (littlereddoor.org) or Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org).
