Obituary

Norma (Whitaker) Carlton, 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 18th, 2024. She was born in Somerset, Kentucky on November 11, 1927 to James Walter & Pearl "Pearlie" (Burdine) Whitaker. Norma married Carlis Rayford "Ray" Carlton on July 1, 1944 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. The couple moved back and forth from Pulaski County, Kentucky and Hendricks County, Indiana before permanently settling in the Pittsboro/Danville area. Norma had a caregiver's heart, much of her life was spent caring for various siblings, nieces/nephews, parents, in-laws and grandchildren. She played an active role in all of her children's lives, loving each and every one of them unconditionally. She believed in each of her children and grandchildren and was extremely proud of them. Her actions spoke volumes and her love was abundant. Norma was an avid gardener, who tended her flower garden until well into her upper 80's. Roses were her favorite flowers to plant, with red roses topping the list. She and Ray always raised a big garden with plenty to share. They followed the ASA and Nascar racing circuits, traveling around the country to attend racing events until age relegated them to watching from the living room couch. Norma's other passion was quilting, making gorgeous quilts for her family until she was in her 90's. Her favorite TV programs were "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy". She would have been an amazing contestant on "the Wheel", as she often solved the puzzles long before anyone else. Norma always tried to put God first and foremost in her life, attending Brownsburg Church of the Nazarene for almost 50 years, then the Pittsboro Baptist Church. Norma was preceded in death by both parents, her husband Ray, youngest son Jimmie, son-in-law, Jim Ragsdale and siblings Orpha, Marl, Scoble, Ron, Carlos & Jerry. Left to mourn her memory and celebrate her life are children, Doris Ragsdale, Donald (Janet) Carlton, Anita (David) Marsh and daughter-in-law Shirley Carlton; 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 21st, at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, Indiana from 11 am to 1 pm, with the funeral service beginning at 1 pm. Interment will immediately follow at the K of P Cemetery, Lizton, Indiana.
