Obituary

Richard Howard Wade 85, Brownsburg, entered eternal life on May 25, 2011. He is survived by his beloved family, wife Jane Bernadette; sons Dr. Steven Howard (Dr. Deborah Ann Ott), Bethesda, MD, Neil Everett, and Brian Lawrence; granddaughters Catherine Eva and Emily Christine, both PhD students in science; brother Robert M (Joan); sisters-in-law Helen E Wade and Margaret J. Orth; many treasured nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Carole Grace, a Merit Scholar at Indiana University; parents Claude Everett and Eva (McGlennen); in-laws Lawrence Benjamin and Grace Baird Moore; brother Claude M. Wade; brother-in-law Col. T. William Orth. A graduate of Purdue University with a BS degree in Horticulture, his career included the University of Chicago, Head of Grounds Department, and Melvin Simon and Associates. His best known project for MSA was interior and exterior landscaping for the Mall of America in Minnesota, the largest retail mall in the United States. Richard was a distinguished combat veteran of WWII European Theater from 1944-46. As a PFC, serving in a Chaffee M24 tank with the 3rd Army, 2d Armored Cavalry Group under General George S. Patton, he was awarded 2 bronze stars and numerous unit citations. He was a LIFE Member of the 2d Cavalry Association, founded in 1896, the oldest veterans organization associated directly with a single US Army unit. He was a 1st Lieutenant and honorary Dragoon of the organization. The 2d Cavalry Group is the longest continuously serving mounted combat unit in the United States Army.  He is also a member of Brownsburg American Legion Post 331.  Richard is a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church. Calling will be held in the church vestibule from 11am-1pm Thurs. June 16. Mass will follow, presided by Rev. George F. Plaster, pastor of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, friend and spiritual counselor of the family for many years. Fr. Joe M. Feltz will concelebrate the Mass. Following the Mass, burial with military honors will be at St. Malachy Cemetery, Brownsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. Malachy Catholic Church, 9833 E.
