Robert Lee Schmidt

85, Avon, passed away on October 18, 2021.  He was a member of Avon United Methodist Church and the Avon United Methodist Church Missions Committee.  He was a US Army Veteran serving for 6 years.  Bob was a member and past commander of the Hendricks County Military Honor Guard.  He was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts with Avon Troop 306 from 1970 to 1988.  He was also a member of Toastmasters International Krannert Club, Scottish Rite, Avon Optimist Club, a 32 ^nd Degree Mason and member of the Masonic Bridgeport Lodge.  Robert was a volunteer for 22 years at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center where he twice received the Volunteer of the Year Award for the Transport Service Department.  Bob was a Trustee of the Avon School Corporation from 1978 to 1982 and President of the Avon School Corporation PTA from 1969 to 1972.  He and wife Karlene participated in several charity bicycle rides to raise funds benefiting the children of state troopers killed in the line of duty.  He worked for Kroger as a store manager and increased his responsibilities to District manager and in 1972 to Area Zone manager retiring in 1975.  After retirement, Robert held several positions in the food industry including Vice President of Meat Operations for Allied Grocery of Indiana, Director of Meat Operations for Wetterau Foods, and Meat Merchandiser for Taylor Brokerage.   Robert was preceded in death by his wife Karlene Kay Schmidt; parents George and Catherine Schmidt; sister Shirley Moffitt.  Survivors include his sons Eric Schmidt, Thor (Diana) Schmidt, Dane (Kim) Schmidt, Kyle (Tammy) Schmidt, Raud (Kandy) Schmidt; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.  Visitation will be from 4 pm to 7 pm Wed. Oct. 27 at Avon United Methodist Church, 6850 E. US Hwy 36, Avon, IN 46123, with funeral services there on Thurs. Oct. 28 at 10 am.  Burial will be in West Ridge Cemetery.  Donations my be made to the Veteran Health of Indiana at www.indianapolis.va.gov
