Robert F.
Waggoner
January 27, 1924 – May 27, 2018
Robert F. "Bob" Waggoner
was the first born to Herman and Grace Waggoner on Jan. 27, 1924, and he passed on to eternal life on May 27, 2018. He was the older brother to Jim, Jack, Ben, June Ballard and Tom who all preceded him in death. At 94 he had lived a full, productive life centered on family, faith, work and service.
Bob married the love of his life Eloise Hyten Waggoner on Jan. 31, 1947, who survives him. They enjoyed over 71 years together modeling the ingredients for a lasting relationship: love, patience and respect. Together they grew a family of four children: Pam (Bill) Lyons, Larry (Sharon), Patty Carroll, and Don (Jennie) Waggoner. Then came 8 treasured grandchildren: Michelle Creek, Natalie Lyons, Brad Lyons, Nick Waggoner, Brandon Waggoner, Matthew Waggoner, Jonathan Waggoner and Andrew Waggoner. They also have 9 great-grandchildren with one on the way. Every member of this family always knew they could count on Dad or Grandpa to help, no matter the problem. He would dish out some harsh truth and then step in to help them pick up the pieces.
Once Bob's parents had passed, as the senior member of the Waggoner clan, Bob saw it as his welcomed responsibility to keep the family connected. He was as proud of each of his 14 nieces and nephews as he was his own children. Family meant everything to him.
A WWII veteran of the Army Air Corps, Bob served in the South Pacific at the same time as two of his brothers were also serving. A proud veteran and dedicated patriot, Bob taught his family to value their patriotism and always proudly display it.
After an early retirement from Bell Telephone Laboratories, Bob worked into his 80's in management positions for Firestone, Models Inc., Dryden Plastics and finally formed BLD LLC, his own machine solutions consulting business. No one worked harder, longer and smarter than Bob. He rose to management level with a GED and no college experience. He was proud of his work ethic and expected the same from those who worked with him, for him or were related to him.
Though work to support his family demanded a great deal of his time, Bob believed in giving back to his community. He did this by helping to start Brownsburg's first rescue squad, assisted other towns in starting their own squads, became a Red Cross Instructor to enhance training, and served on the Brownsburg Police Commission, the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District, and for 18 years on the Brownsburg Town Council.
In their leisure time, Bob and Eloise traveled with the family through 49 of the 50 states usually pulling a camper behind a customized pick-up truck. For many years he enjoyed also traveling by motorcycle and racing at the old Speedway Stock Car Track and the early Raceway Park track. For his 80
th
birthday his family gave him the gift of driving a NASCAR vehicle. He proved he still had it by climbing through the window like any other driver and taking off at maximum speed.
A long-time member of Messiah Lutheran Church, 801 S. Green St., Brownsburg, a celebration of life service will be held there for Bob at 11am Saturday June 9 with visitation from 9-11am.
