Obituary

Roy E. Watkins Sr., 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Born August 30, 1951, in Terre Haute, Indiana to John T. and Anna D. Ross Watkins, Roy lived a life marked by hard work and a deep love for the people who meant the most to him.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Watkins, grandson, Christian Watkins, and sister-in-law, Carol P. Watkins.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Dillman; his children Roy E. Watkins, Jr. (Angela), Krystal Watkins, Alyssa Robinson (Justin), and Cameron Watkins (Hope); and stepchildren Jerry Haynes, Jr. (Betty), Pam Scott, Teresa Coghill, and Mark Todd Haynes (Brandi). He is also survived by his brother, John T. Watkins, Jr., many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, and four nieces.

Roy devoted nearly 30 years of his life teaching automotive services and retired from Walker Career Center at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. More than a teacher, Roy was a mentor, leader, and someone who believed in helping others find purpose and confidence in the automotive world. He played an integral role in the development of automotive vocational programs for I-CAR, VICA and El Paso Community College and left a lasting impact on countless students throughout his career.

Roy was an active member at Fairhaven New Life Church in Mulberry, IN. He loved old country music, tinkering on projects out in his barn and a strong cup of coffee - or three. Of all things Roy loved, family was at the center. He treasured every opportunity to spend time with children and grandchildren whether in person or on FaceTime, sharing laughs, stories, and moments big and small.

Roy was skilled, determined, and truly a jack of all trades. He could build almost anything, fix nearly everything, and if he did not know how, he would learn. He was a problem solver through and through - someone who met challenges with persistence and quiet determination. People naturally turned to Roy for help because he always found a way.

Though our hearts are broken and he will be missed beyond measure, we will find comfort knowing Roy’s faith has become sight. We can only imagine the joy of his long-awaited reunion with his father where they are surely casting lines, fishing side by side once again.

The lessons Roy taught and the memories he created will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Services will be held at Matthews Mortuary in Brownsburg, IN with visitation on Friday, May 22nd from 11:00-1:00 with funeral services at 1:00PM with burial to follow at Brownsburg Cemetery.
