Obituary

Steven Michael Weathers, 68, of Brownsburg, passed away after a long struggle with cancer on March 7, 2018. Steve was born in Indianapolis on May 15, 1949 to Ercie (Lepper) and Robert Weathers. He had one sister, Cheryl "Sherry" Weathers.

"Steve was an incredible son. Mom and Dad were so proud of him and as a brother, even though he was 10 years older, he was so loving and supportive," said Sherry. "I will look up to him every day."

He married the love of his life, Debra "Debbie" (Hubele) on November 13, 1976 in Indianapolis. Debbie's Grandfather, Paul Hubele, conducted the ceremony at Southport Christian Church. Steve graduated from Northwest High School in Indianapolis, and then went to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. He immediately went to work for Delta Airlines, a company true to his aviation heart.

One of Steve's greatest accomplishments was bringing three wonderful children into this world: Kyle, Kristen, and Kirk. They brought him so much joy and learned much of what they know from him. All three will continue to live each day trying to follow in his giant footsteps. "My Dad is the greatest man I've ever known," Kyle said. "I've always loved and looked up to him but being able to spend the last few years building the foundation of my own family's home *with* him was an incredible experience. Every time I look around my house, I can see my Dad."

While flying was one of Steve's greatest joys, his wife and children were even more important to him. Rather than working as a pilot, he chose to be a gate agent for Delta Airlines, so he could always be close to his family. Steve, also known as "Twig," retired from Delta after 30 years of duty and putting two of his children through college. After his retirement, he missed the day-in and day-out of work and wanted to help put his third child through engineering school. Steve went back to work for Harmon Steel and became a colleague and friend to many. Even after he retired from Harmon, he kept his old-fashioned work "flip phone" so the company could call him if they ever needed his help, which they did on occasion.

Steve was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and spent a week every summer for the past 40 years attending EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, Wis. Many of those trips were spent with his wife and children. Steve's most cherished title – besides son, brother, husband, and father – was grandpa. He absolutely loved being a "papa," and his grandchildren loved it even more. He was a gentle giant, at 6 foot 3 inches, but would gladly get down on the floor, or bend down to pull a tiny wagon, and play with all of them. Steve attended Connection Pointe Christian Church, where he recently saw his youngest son, Kirk, marry Madison (VanFossen).

Steve was diagnosed with cancer on May 15, 2017, his 68 th birthday. He immediately started treatment and endured two rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Even though it was an incredibly difficult process, Steve maintained his humor, constantly making doctors and nurses laugh, even through his pain. After a few months of treatment, the family was told the tumor would not kill Steve. His future life, including walking, would be altered, due to the devastation the tumor caused internally, but the family was ecstatic that they'd get more time with Steve. Unfortunately, after a number of months on an immunotherapy, the cancer spread, and took Steve's life too early.

Survivors include his wife Debbie Weathers; children Kyle (Lucia) Weathers, Kristen (Stephen) Stivers, and Kirk (Madison) Weathers; four grandchildren (Carter, Madilyn, Chloe and Noelle); and sister Cheryl "Sherry" Weathers. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Robert, and mother, Ercie, who died Jan. 22 of this year.

"I will always remember Steve's kindness and willingness to help. He was such a great example of how a man can be strong, yet gentle," said Drew Hildenbrand, care pastor at Connection Pointe Christian Church.

Steve's visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, March 12, at Connection Pointe Christian Church, with funeral services immediately following there.

"He didn't know a stranger and was willing to help anyone. His sense of humor was legendary. All that knew him, knew what an incredible person he was," said Sherry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society www.cancer.org in memory of Steven M. Weathers. May Steve's helping hands extend to all from heaven.
