Dr. Ursula Post Mitman age 91, of Indianapolis, IN, died on Sunday, November 23, 2014. She spent her last days and hours surrounded by her family and the caring staff at Marquette. Ursula was born in Oschersleben, Germany. Her dream to become a physician was halted due to wartime Germany; despite obstacles she earned her medical degree in Frankfurt am Main in 1956. She immigrated to the United States with her three year old son Matthias in 1957. In 1958 she married Oliver Benson Mitman, father of six, and with him had three more children. Determined to resume her medical career, she passed her U.S. Medical Boards in 1967 specializing in Radiology. Ursula began her career as Radiologist at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis, leading the way as one of the first female radiologists on staff. She continued her career in medicine at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, retiring in the late 1980s. In addition to rearing her family of ten, Ursula cultivated her interests in art, music, and travel, as well as being an avid gardener and walking enthusiast. She was generous at heart but had little tolerance for idleness. A passionate advocate of education, Ursula not only insisted her children further their education, she also inspired many others to continue their studies. Having lost family and possessions due to the ravages of war, she declared, "Education is the one thing they can't take away from you." Ursula is preceded in death by her son Eric, husband Ben, and brother Günter. Surviving family members include her sister Hanna Kopp of Germany; children Bert Mitman (Annie Burns), Jay (Vickie) Mitman, Wilton (Nancy) Mitman, Lucy Beth May, Cynthia (Mark) Schall, Matthias Mitman (Susan Elliott), Andrea Mitman (the late Loper Glover), Tamara Mitman, and Betsy (Scott) Boleman; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A 16 year resident at Marquette's senior living community, she enjoyed many friendships and activities there. Ursula resided in Assisted Living, Reflections and the Health Care Center at Marquette during her declining years. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff for their compassion and attentive care of Ursula. Visitation is Saturday, November 29 from 10a.m. to 12 p.m. and services 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Matthews Mortuary in Brownsburg, Indiana. Burial will follow at 2p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hillsboro, Indiana.
