Obituary

Vernon (Pete) L Shepherd Age 94, passed December 5, 2025. He was born November 18, 1931, to Noble and Verna (Hughes) Shepherd. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Leslie and Hiram, and his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Jane (Fargo) Shepherd.

Survived by his three children: M. Lee (Leatrice), Mark (Peggy), and Lois Farley (Dan), six grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren.

His childhood started in Ripley County IN. The government purchased many homes in the area during WWII.  The Jefferson Proving Grounds used the land for military testing. Big Oak National Wildlife Refuge, located in the Proving Grounds, has "Chimney Point" in the lake; it is the chimney of Vernon's first, log cabin home.  After the purchase, the family moved to a small farm in Jennings County.

Vernon met his future wife while attending Zenas elementary and North Vernon high school. He graduated in 1948.  They married in May of 1953.

Vernon was in the National Guard and an active Army veteran during the Korean War Era.

After he came home from serving in Korea, his first job off the farm was at the North Vernon Plain Dealer and Sun.  This is where he learned the printing trade. He worked there 13 years before moving to Indianapolis.  In Indianapolis he went to work at a printing company called Rough Notes until his retirement.  He was a member of the Indianapolis Typographical Union

He was a lifetime member of the Hendricks County Antique Tractor and Machinery Association (HCATMA.)  He enjoyed old farm equipment and donated some pieces to the Prophetstown History Museum to help preserve the history of farming.  He believed that the most beautiful tractor was the one that was working in the field.  His favorite color tractor was RED!
