Violet R.
Floyd
December 28, 1930 – May 19, 2024
Violet Roberta Floyd (93) of Brownsburg, Indiana passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 19, 2024. She was born on December 28, 1930, in Wideman, Arkansas to Wylie Earl and Alma Noba Helm. Roberta lived in Arkansas, Kentucky and Indiana during her childhood and attended Tech High School in Indianapolis for two years, before returning home to Oxford and graduating in 1948. Following high school, Roberta attended the Draughon Business College in Springfield, Missouri where she learned secretarial skills and received a certificate in the spring of 1949. She then worked at the REA office in Salem, AR until she married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, James Demelee Floyd on July 7, 1951.
The newly married couple relocated to Indianapolis to obtain work and together raised five children in the Brownsburg area. Having grown up during The Great Depression, Roberta was a very frugal and resourceful homemaker and managed the family budget. She always had a garden and enjoyed canning and freezing fresh vegetables to feed her family well even in lean times. She would often say that nothing tasted better than Indiana-grown tomatoes and corn! She also worked alongside her husband in a family construction business for many years. Upon retirement, James and Roberta returned to Arkansas where they enjoyed 20 years of living in Mountain Home before returning to Brownsburg in 2013.
Roberta was a woman of strong faith and her reliance on her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ brought her through many tough times. Through the years, she was a member of various churches and most recently attended Pittsboro Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing and playing piano - particularly the old hymns - and encouraged a love of music in her children and grandchildren as well. It always brought her joy to attend the closing program of the Brockwell Gospel Music School to hear her children and grandchildren learn and sing the shaped notes.
There is no doubt that her greatest pride and joy was her family, she was always delighted to spend time with family and dear friends. Roberta is survived by her children: Susan (Johnny) Lovelace of Mountain Home, AR; Tim (Sherry) Floyd and Steve Floyd of Brownsburg; and Sara (Michael) Eldredge of Owensboro, KY. Daughter-in-law: Cindi (Floyd) Petkovich of Mountain Home, AR; Sisters: Louise Tucker of Speedway, IN; Saundra Elam of Bruno, AR; Sister-in-law: Beverly Helm of Brownsburg, IN; half-sisters: Mary Knapp of Graham, WA; Janna Bieber, Overland Park, KS. As well as 14 Grandchildren, 18 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Granddaughter. She is preceded in death by her parents Earl and Noba Helm; her husband of 62 years James Demelee Floyd; son David W. Floyd; great-granddaughters: Jillian Kizer and Hallie Paige Floyd; siblings: Franklin Helm, Allene Morgan, and Ada Allen.
Services will be held at the Brockwell Tabernacle in Brockwell, Arkansas on June 1, 2024, with Pastor Mike Haney officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:30am and funeral at 12:30pm followed by immediate burial at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, Arkansas. Memorials may be made to the Brockwell Gospel Music School, PO Box 28, Brockwell, AR 72577 or to David's Trail, 1216 Highway 62 East, Mountain Home, AR, 72653
