Steven Matthews

President, Funeral Director

Steven Matthews, a lifelong resident of Brownsburg, was born the same year his father, Keith Matthews, started the funeral home (Jones & Matthews Mortuary) in 1946. A 1964 graduate of Brownsburg High School, he graduated from Wabash College with honors in 1968. He served in the US Army from 1968-70 and was stationed in Germany at Headquarters 6th Bn 59th Arty for one and a half years. After military service, he continued his education at the Indiana College of Mortuary Science, graduating with honors in 1971. He continued with the Mortuary College as instructor of general and grief psychology until 1980, when the college was moved to Jeffersonville, IN. He has worked in the Hendricks County Coroner’s Office since 1973, serving as elected Coroner 16 of those years.

He was a founding member of Cornerstone Christian Church in 1980 where he served as an elder for many years and continues to teach adult Sunday School. He is a member of the Indiana Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association and the Indiana State Coroners Association.

Having received his funeral director’s license in 1971, he is proud to operate a family-owned funeral home, along with his son, serving the community of Brownsburg and the surrounding area. He is a guest lecturer at Brownsburg High School several times throughout the year and an instructor at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. He and his wife, Karen-Lee, were privileged to have raised their son, Jason Matthews, and their daughter, Alyson Lurker, in the Brownsburg Community and School systems. Jason and Alyson still live in this community and are raising our five grandchildren in this community and the Brownsburg Schools.

Jason Matthews

Vice-Pres. Funeral Director

Jason Matthews is a lifelong resident of Brownsburg. He is a third generation funeral director with Matthews Mortuary. Jason is a 1991 graduate of Brownsburg High School. He received a degree in education from Ball State University in 1995 and briefly taught for the Brownsburg Community School Corporation.

In 1997 he earned a degree in mortuary science from Mid-America College of funeral service. Jason has almost 25 years of experience in funeral service and is proud to operate a family-owned funeral home. He is proud and honored to serve the community in which he lives.

He has worked for the Hendricks County Coroner’s office since 1996 with 8 of those years serving as Hendricks County Coroner. He has been a guest instructor for the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy since 1996. He is a member of Cornerstone Christian Church, Indiana Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association and Indiana State Coroners Association.

Jason’s two children are Nicholas and Abigail and both attend Brownsburg Schools. He loves spending time with his children and family and enjoys spending time outdoors.

Joseph Neuman

Funeral Director - In Memoriam

January 15, 1952 - March 6, 2024

Joe Neuman, a funeral director since 2003 at Matthews Mortuary, after graduation in 2003 from Mid-America College of Funeral Service and receiving a Degree of Associate of Applied Science Funeral Service. He began his employment with Matthews Mortuary in 2002, while attending Mid-America College. A resident of Brownsburg since 1980, he was a former EMT and volunteer fireman for Brownsburg Fire Department for several years. Joe served for sixteen years in the Hendricks County Coroner’s Office, eight years as a deputy coroner and eight years as the elected County Coroner. He is a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church, Brownsburg and the father of three and grandfather of two. He enjoys owning and restoring classic muscle cars.

Katie Arant

Funeral Director

Katie Arant, is a first generation Funeral Director and embalmer. Katie was born and raised in Aiken, South Carolina. After taking a secretarial position at a funeral home in Georgia Katie felt called to start a career in the funeral business. At the age of 32 she enrolled at Gupton Jones College of Funeral Science in Decatur, GA and graduated in March of 2017.

Katie and her husband Jeremy have lived in Hendricks County a combined total of 4 years, having lived in Indiana once before. They have 2 dogs, a German shepherd and a Yorkie mix. Katie and her husband enjoy trips to Tybee Island in Georgia and the mountains of Gatlinburg, TN. They attend Summit Life Church, Pittsboro, where they teach the elementary age children. Katie joined Matthews Mortuary in November of 2018. Having experienced the loss of her own loved ones, Katie has empathy for grieving families and strives to show compassion to the families she meets. She believes a simple smile and showing kindness goes a long way in helping families feel a since of hope during a difficult time in their lives.

Gregory Monnett

Funeral Director

Gregory K. Monnett is a first generation funeral director and embalmer. He was born and raised in Greencastle, IN, where he attended school, graduating from Greencastle High School. He then attended Indiana State University for two years. After that Gregory then attended and graduated from Mid America College of Funeral Service in 1986. Gregory also served as Chief Deputy Coroner for Putnam County from 1990-93. He has been a funeral director serving families in the Hendricks County region for over 30 years. Gregory joined the firm of Matthews Mortuary in October 2024. He is the current President of the Plainfield Board of Zoning Appeals where he has been serving since 2003. A former Boy Scout Troop Leader for many years, he is a member of Plainfield United Methodist Church. Gregory has been married to his wife Dina since 1990. They have a son Corbin (wife Myranda) and daughter Carly. Corbin and Myranda have a son Dawson. Gregory enjoys spending time with his family, especially with his grandson, and camping.

Karen-Lee Matthews

Office Manager

Karen-Lee Matthews is a lifelong resident of Brownsburg. She graduated from Brownsburg High School in 1966 and received her BS and MS from Butler University in Business Education with a license in Vocational Education. She is a member of Indiana Retired Teachers Association and an Honorary Retired member of Psi Iota Xi Philanthropic Sorority.

She taught several years at IVY Tech and then taught at Avon High School in the Business Department. While at Avon, she was the Advisor of Business Professionals and facilitated the high school Internship Program. She retired from Avon High School in 2006 and now works for the mortuary.

Karen-Lee and her husband, Steve, were founding members of Cornerstone Christian Church in 1980 and Karen-Lee has taught elementary Sunday School since the beginning of Cornerstone. Karen-Lee has also served in many other various areas in the church.

Karen-Lee and Steve have two children, Jason Matthews, and Alyson Lurker who both graduated from Brownsburg High School. They also have five grandchildren in the Brownsburg Schools.

Emily Pemberton

Funeral Service Intern

Emily is a 2023 graduate of Tri-West High School and a recent graduate of Ivy Tech's Mortuary Science program, beginning her internship at Matthews Mortuary in August of 2025. After focusing her efforts on art and writing, Emily’s passion shifted to post-mortem care while taking her first high school anatomy class. Following a short stint at the IUI forensic science program, Emily realized she wanted to be more personally involved with families for the dignity and memorialization of their loved ones. Emily currently resides in Pittsboro with her parents and many, many pets. She will be a first-generation funeral director, but comes from a family driven by care and compassion. Her mother is a critical care nurse at Eskenazi, her father is a former teacher and current Assistant Principal at Tri-West High School, and her brother is a U.S Army soldier currently stationed at Fort Bliss. Emily is eager to continue her career alongside her mentors at Matthews Mortuary, and is proud to represent the next generation of young women in funeral service.
